📰 “More Than Paint”: An Interview with Artist Warrijirri-Yarra (Arron Yarran)
The story behind the Swan Cultural Canvas at Midland Gate
Â
As part of our Swan Cultural Canvas initiative, we had the pleasure of sitting down with Warrijirri-Yarra (Arron Yarran) — the lead artist behind the vibrant mural that now lives proudly near the double-storey carpark entrance at Midland Gate.
Â
The mural is more than an artwork — it’s a layered representation of culture, resilience, connection, and identity. Through symbolism, natural elements, and vibrant colour, Arron brought to life a piece that reflects not only Noongar Country, but also the stories and spirit of the Midland community.
Â
During the interview, we asked Arron:
Â
“If you could describe the mural in one sentence, what would it be?”
Â
She paused for a moment, then smiled and replied:
Â
“I’d say, awesome, magical. It was a journey to take, and sometimes the murals are easy to do. Sometimes they’re not — a lot of thinking goes into it. But the main thing was bringing community together. And me, I love telling stories about my Country and culture.”
Â
That one response summed up everything this project has meant — to Arron, to us, and to the many people who have stopped to admire it, ask questions, or simply pause in front of it to reflect.

The mural was created over several days, and throughout the process, Arron welcomed conversations with passersby — from curious students to local Elders. “I loved when kids would ask what each part of the mural meant,” he said. “That’s where the storytelling starts.”
Â
Her commitment to cultural representation is deeply felt in the details — from the flowing waterways to the abstract journeys and footprints that symbolise both ancient paths and modern community movement.
Â
Legacy Through Storytelling
Â
One of the most powerful aspects of the Swan Cultural Canvas is its enduring presence. It’s not a temporary installation — it’s now part of the landscape, a permanent reflection of the values and diversity that make Midland special.
Â
“This mural isn’t just about colour,” Arron said. “It’s about voice. About remembering, sharing, and honoring who we are.”
Â
We are incredibly proud to have worked alongside Arron to bring this story to life, and we’re thankful to the City of Swan for supporting the project through their Proactive Grants Program.
